A fortnight of coverage doesn’t usually resolve into a single argument, and this one doesn’t either. What it does have is a repeated shape. In nearly every story worth reading this month, something that had been quietly scheduled or slowly accumulating arrived all at once, and the arrival got reported as a surprise. Start with oil, because that is where the shape is clearest. Saudi Arabia lost both of its export routes within days, after a drone attack put the East-West pipeline out of service and the Houthis closed on Bab el-Mandeb.

E.W. Scripps sent layoff notices to 268 people at the start of August, part of what the company calls the next phase of a transformation plan. The plan involves centralising newsroom functions, launching round-the-clock local streaming channels and using more automation as audiences keep drifting away from broadcast television. Read that sentence twice. Centralising, streaming, automating. Those three words describe every local broadcast restructure of the past decade, and they arrive in that order for a reason.

YouTube has launched a Creator Partnerships API that gives brands access to performance data on audience engagement and viewership. Read past the announcement language and what it does is convert creator deals from a relationship business into a media planning exercise that looks like buying any other inventory. That’s a bigger change than it sounds, and creators should think carefully about which side of it they end up on. What the API replaces Influencer marketing has run for a decade on a mix of screenshots, agency relationships, negotiated rate cards and trust.

Most arguments about the AI cycle get made with leading indicators, and leading indicators are the ones sentiment can fake. Funding rounds price expectations. Model launches announce intent. Backlogs, national accounts, employment statistics and power procurement work differently. They move only after the money has been spent and the contracts have been signed, which makes them the strongest available evidence about where the cycle actually stands. On 11 August the lagging indicators moved, and they moved up.

The arithmetic behind a $4,000 SanDisk share price is unremarkable. Take consensus fiscal 2027 earnings of roughly $168 per share, apply a price-to-earnings multiple of 22, which is about where the S&P 500 sits, and the answer falls out. Evercore’s bull case gets there a different way, assuming better than $300 in earnings power against a headline target of $3,100. Neither calculation requires SanDisk to beat anything. Both require only that the market agree to value NAND flash earnings the way it values the average large-cap American company.

The Federal Trade Commission granted early termination of the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period for Adobe’s purchase of Topaz Labs on July 28, and the tape spent July 29 crediting the notice with a 5.7% advance. Shares traded between $247.52 and $266.24 and settled near $261, on 9.84 million shares against a 5.51 million average, the fourth consecutive up session and the highest level in roughly two months. The attribution is at best partial.

I’m a hawk on this. I think the export controls on advanced chips are correct, I think Beijing’s technology apparatus serves an authoritarian state that will use every capability it acquires against people who can’t vote it out, and I’ve never found the argument that engagement moderates that state persuasive on any evidence I’ve seen. If you’re looking for someone to tell you the controls were a mistake, keep looking.

I’ve defended this technology more often than I’ve criticized it. I use it every day, I think most of the panic about it is recycled panic about the last thing, and I’ve been openly impatient with people who treat every new tool as evidence of civilizational decline. Writing with a model is not cheating. Thinking out loud to one is not pathology. So take this from someone who isn’t looking for reasons to worry.

Together AI has closed an $800 million Series C at an $8.3 billion post-money valuation, led by Aramco Ventures with participation from Vista Equity Partners, General Catalyst, Emergence Capital, NVIDIA, March Capital, Pegatron, and S Ventures (SentinelOne), among others.
